Kansas City

An excerpt from Gone Mild:

A wise friend of mine explained Kansas City's penchant for non-accomplishment in the light of history. "Kansas City was settled", he pointed out, "by people who left the East on their way to California. When they got to Kansas City and looked out over the vast prairie separating them from the Promised Land, they said, 'Aww, what the heck? This is good enough.' We are the offspring of people who had a grand plan, but only followed it half the distance."

I think there is wisdom in this statement, only if you allow yourself to make excuses. Perhaps the people saw more potential in this place than they had heard existed in the West. Perhaps they were more entrepreneurial and had greater vision than those who travelled all the way to California. Or maybe, our friend Derek is right...they got here in the first week of April on a streak of mild weather and thought, "this is a nice place" and then they built their homes...and then it got really hot &humid and they were like "shit."
